Barnett Newman’s Stations of the Cross: Lema Sabachthani, the First Station

Barnett Newman's Stations of the Cross: Lema Sabachthani, the First Station

Newman painted 14 paintings in this series called Stations of the Cross. The first represents the condemnation of Christ.

The right edge of the painting is thought to represent human concerns. The left edge is thought to ask the eternal questions of “why?” The white “zip” shows spirituality breaking through the blackness towards the right edge.

There’s something beautiful in the simplicity of this painting.
